Hi, I have an understanding of what SEO is and does. I am trying to find information after which i could say to a potential employer that I know SEO. To make it clearer, if you have any concrete examples of SEO practice please let me know here or in a PM. Please keep in mind that I want to know how exactly it is applied in a work environment; I mean I constantly see adds "SEO expert needed", but I can never understand what exactly can you do on a full time job as a SEO...

Any information or just a push in the right direction would be helpful.

PS: Any book suggestions would also be very helpful.

Search engine land has a nice article for books: http://searchengineland.com/a-roundup-of-2009s-best-seo-books-30918

You'll need experience ultimately with clients before you can claim to know SEO/SEM practices, there's much more to it than you may think. It may be the finishing gap between a nightmare and an efficient well-formed site. I'm sure the books would provide more concrete examples of business practices, you should like some of them.

Yeah I was thinking nothing can replace experience aswell; I am going to try my luck and apply for a 6months SEO experience required position anyway and see how that goes. I'm hoping I can read enough material within two weeks to get me through the door and since the training is provided I'm sure I should be able to pick it up with no problem. Thanks for the link,

Hello,
All market is full with lots of tools that promise top 10 positions in Google,100000 backlinks in seconds and other cracks.
I will give you a list of things to NOT to do in a link building strategie.

1) Do not submit your site to more than 50 directories in a month. This are types of directories where are you sure your site will appear.

Submit to more and you will get the sandbox effect upon your site.

2) Do not make link exchanges site wide.Site wide means with the whole site. You will see it doesnt help you more than a link exchange with a page relevant that is positioning good in SERPS.

3) Do not place your link in forums signature. You will see no difference in SERPS.Why? its like the site wide Link exchange but more irrelevant

4) Do not make Link exchanges with sites that have more than 100 links on a page(internal links and external links).First of all G will see that page spamy.Try to place on more pages more than 100 internal links, wait 3,4 days and check the messages from webmaster tools. You will get a message from googlebot that warnings you have lots of links on pages.

thanks!!

I agree with you. I use seobook to learn more about SEO. I think members in this forum should try using seobook. It has a lot of available free tools and the tutorial is superb!

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art of getting a website to work better with search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo, and to look for achievable, profitable, ranking opportunities through keyword research. SEO is a quest for increased visibility in search engines via relevant copy, quality links, domain trust, social popularity and search engine connectivity. If you can’t be bothered with that – other stuff works just as well

Search engine optimization is basically following the essential SEO strategies in order to improve the rankings of the keywords in the search engines. All the SEO strategies are aimed at that. Getting a good search engine ranking means getting good traffic to your website.
