Hi people,
I was wondering if somebody could let me know how software updates work? Like Firefox or anti-virus or windows updates. What is that mechanism/technology and algorithm if any ?
Thank you

For many of them, they are either doing an uninstall/reinstall, or updating a database file.

Thank you wingedPanther for the response, but I would like to know more details about how an application detects that updates are available for itself on the internet. Like firefox .

It knows it's version, and checks a website requesting the latest version. If they don't match, there's an update.
