use of Clrscr and getch outside the main program

I have used clrscr and getch outside the main program and i found result quite annoying..
use of clrscr() gives an error...
but use of getch() outside the main function doesnt prompt any error... but it does not provides the functionality of getting a character....

i have no clue about this incident...
anybody having any idea about this problem plz write here...
