I have a job right now and I don't know if it would be more helpful for my career to get a job slightly more in my field. Right now my title is Student IT Assistant through my school. But most of the time I am editing websites and once in a while I will deal with some php and mysql, but I can work a lot of hours and get a good reference from my boss after I am done with school. But I have a feeling I should be doing actual programming so I can get some experience, but I feel that I might not have the experience for that. I am technically a Sophomore is CS and was wondering if it would be better to show that I could hold a job thus staying at this job for 2 years, or to get an internship with a programming firm or the like. What would look better to someone hiring me after school?

PS: when I have a spare moment at work I do brush up on my programming skills if that helps.

That depends a lot on the perspective of the employer. I would say it's better to hold one job longer.

I forget where but the study I read when I got out of college recommended this career path for finding getting a decent paying job.

Get your first job and stay there for 6 months to a year getting the hang of things. Then switch jobs around once or twice more then get a good job and stay there for atleast 5-6+ years then reasses your own career track.

Ofcourse if you're in college for your undergrad work and your intentions are either graduate+ or research at a company you should continue to work at your college and get in on some research projects for undergrads.

This all really depends on what you want to accomplish as well as where you intend to find a job the current economy of that country as well as the global economy...

Saying you can optimize a program is like saying you understand how a program works on every level of every facet on a specific machines configuration.

Thanks This really helps because I just had a feeling I was putting all my eggs into one basket and had not checked to see if it was a worth while basket. I think that all I need to do is find a good urop. Thanks for your input.

I recently did some work with my university on a network rollout project i've been doing a little tech support since with them but i've had to scale back my work with the uni because my study load was just getting quite busy in the last two months or so.
