I'm looking in to earning a masters degree in statistics and will have enough classes to earn a minor in software engineering. Is it possible to work in the IT sector as a software engineer or any type of programming?

I have a masters in math (mainly logic/set theory) and work as a programmer for a living. There's a LOT of opportunities in industry for someone who can code statistical analysis of data.
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

How did you get the programming job? Did you do an internship prior to working? I'm interested in becoming a software engineer, but everyone says it's much easier to get involved in programming if you have a computer science degree. I'll have a minor in computer science, would that increase the odds of getting in to a software engineering company?

I started out doing documentation/training, and quickly proved that I have actual talent for programming. It helped that I got started in a small company where people move up based on proven talent/skill. One of our lead developers got his bachelors in music!
