Okay just look at this or try going to the Simple English Wikipedia (Wikipedia) Here is the wikipedia one:

Kernel (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

P.S. Investigate Operating System on Wikipedia (your probably getting tired of Wikipedia) so basically, a Kernel is a type of bridge, or walkway if you will, to Software to Hardware. From memory anyway :)

After you read this book Amazon.com: Understanding the Linux Kernel, Third Edition (9780596005658): Daniel P. Bovet, Marco Cesati Ph.D.: Books and this book Amazon.com: Operating Systems Design and Implementation (3rd Edition) (9780131429383): Andrew S Tanenbaum, Albert S Woodhull: Books you should be ready to start asking questions about writing an Operating System.
