Ok so I have this friend that boards at this school and he plays world of warcraft however sadly its blocked (either by there filtery proxy fing or the firewall… im not sure) not intentionally but blocked because its not recognized… surprise surprise.

So yeah what I’m doing here is creating a super proxy for my friend so he can bypass the fussy firewalls. This is a lot to ask so I’m braking it down into bite sized chunks and this is just an idea that is sure to work if pulled off…. Im totally open to any suggestions to make this easier for me… plllllzzzzz. I thought a powerful language would be needed to create something like this for both client and server software but im flexible with that to.

edit:
Plz note if what im asking here looks dodgy plz know that my freind had notified the admins the trouble was that there is no way of allowing wow as it runs normally to conect through the network with out first weekening the defenses of the entire network first. Setting permissions just wasn't flexible enough, but if i could tame the program that is wow.exe to run like a normal program that uses the internet then the problem would be solved.

Thanks for any helpful responses!

What you are looking for is called a socks proxy. And there are already many tools available to establish socks proxy's over arbitrary ports. The most common method is to establish the proxy with SSH which will give the security and encryption you're looking for.

Since you were originally planning on making a VB .NET program to do this I assume your friend is using Windows to play WoW. Most SSH clients can set up socks proxies, however the most popular SSH client for Windows is puTTY. You can google for many howto's with using puTTY for proxies, however if you'd like to refer to the puTTY documentation on port forwarding here: Using PuTTY

Ahh yes socks proxy, probably should have mentioned what I have already tried.
I tried this for about a month switching programs and such fiddling with settings and sneaking executables to him by archiving and merging them with image files... AND IT ALMOST WORKED!
:sneaky:
I concluded that it was the tunnelling that was the problem, trying to wire it through the network was a nightmare. :crying:
If i where to guess what went wrong id say that there firewall/filtration software; WebMarshal (its a cut above the average btw) blocks everything that it doesn't understand or looks fishy and not normal.

But yeh i didn't try it your way so yeh thats worth a try ill look into it.

Searching "WoW puTTY proxy" in google came up with this as the first result:
http://www.piglovesc...m-your-home-pc/

Which details the exact settings you need to set up a socks proxy for WoW using puTTY.
