I was wondering if there were any programmers out there with more experience than me in the professional scene who could please give me advice. I am a junior in college, so I have to start looking for work pretty soon. Is there anything in particular that employers look for on a programmer's resume? Do you think I should even try working for a company, or should I do freelance work? Or perhaps open source software?
I am still in the dark about a lot of this stuff, so any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

Having some OS projects you've helped with is good on a resume. Make sure you know how to work with databases. Also, be sure you know a few languages, including at least one web and one desktop language.
Most important, know how to learn! The languages you know may not be used where you're hired. You have to be able to pick up new languages quickly.

I'm not in the work force yet, but I would say having certificates to back up what you do. I.E Security Plus, Networking Plus, A Plus, etc.

Make sure the certificates are relevant. Putting A+ on a resume for a Java/C++ programming job is likely to raise questions about your focus.
