There are a lot of different ways to do this, ranging from regular expressions to tokenizing. What types of string processing are you familiar with?

A dll would just represent a library, so your question is: is there a .NET library to do syntax highlighting. Maybe, but you'll have to do some googling for it.

I've written some syntax highlighting rules for jEdit and gVim, but not written an application with syntax highlighting.
