I am curious, I want to know what operating system is the most popular among programmers. If you want post reasons why you like a certain operating system, go ahead, because I am curious about that too.

My favorite operating system is Linux, specifically Ubuntu.

If there is debate from this thread, keep it friendly, no personal insults.

I use windows 7. I like windows for a few reasons 1) Adobe cs4 works on it (I don't think it works on linux and I don't want to convert to a mac) 2) games, games, and more games. 3) the newest version of Ubuntu can't disable IpV6 which irritates me.

also windows 7 has some new features that improve work flow that I like a lot.

If i could find my power cord to my old laptop I would like to try a version of Linux that requires more knowledge then using something like Ubuntu.

Ubuntu sucks... however Windows sucks more, so I use Ubuntu. I've been thinking of choosing another GNU/Linux flavor, but I'm not sure which one to choose because I want a fairly mainstream one that is well supported and has commercial backing, and all of those Linux flavors as such seem to be based on Debian too, so ehh... XD

I also couldn't afford a Mac, or else I'd have one right now. Thus, I don't really know how to answer this poll with any definite answer based on the above, and due to my limited experience, therefore I won't answer it and will simply leave this comment for you to know my opinion.
Wow I changed my sig!

thats like saying a speed boat is better than a kayak. It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Zero Radius really got the point here. There's no "better" OS, there's an OS which is more suitable for each situation.

I really like Linux, but I wouldn't advice a game addict to move from Windows to Linux. I know he could still play a lot of stuff, but why complicate something that is easy?

My point is: softwares should be a solution, not a religion. As a programmer, I like the Unix Based Systems, and I think MacOS is the easiest one, but this works for me and may not work for others.

For what I do, Linux wins. However, I'm curious whether anyone has used ReactOS. I've visited their webpage a few times, but have no idea how stable they've gotten it.

I have tried ReactOS, and it works pretty well, especially in an emulator or virtual machine. Support for Windows programs is as good as wine, and better in some cases. There are a few problems though. Development is slow, I think the developers aren't really active at this point in time. I used to check back and version numbers would go up, but they have been stuck on 0.3.10 for a while now. The other problem is drivers. ReactOS only supports VGA graphics, FAT formatted hard drives, and other basic stuff. If ReactOS makes some huge leaps in development, I could see myself using it, but for now, I will stay with Linux.

And yes, I agree, no operating system is "best", everyone has their own favorites (some people think DOS is the best). I was just joking around :p

How come nobody likes Vista? It can run XP programs + 90% of stuff is made for a PC every one says they hate vista cause it asks you if your sure you want to do that or because of the all the stupid auto updates it has but you can turn those options off and yes it has a lot of viruses but the only reason MACs don't is cause they suck and nobody uses them and because you could buy two good PCs for the price of one crapy MAC. As for Linux they might be great I've never acctuly got to use one before.
