Hey all.

I hope I am dropping this in the right thread,
apologies if I am not.

I'm a UI designer, from fireworks to photoshop.
I love it, but I feel hollow only doing half the job.
I don't want to just be able to draw pretty applications,
I want to build them myself!

I want to build Media Players, Alarm Clocks, Browsers etc.
All with very nonstandard GUIs, I want to use rich rich Graphics environments.
An application like Skype would be a perfect example.

I'm looking for Direction to start this,
I am very passionate, with great drive, throw it at me, and I will succeed.

What language should I be looking at...
And please don't suggest AS3 ;p

Thanks in advance.

There are a ton of languages you could use:
C#, Java, Visual Basic, C++, Python, PHP-GTK, Delphi, etc. etc.

Do you have any knowledge in any language? Have you taking any programming theory type classes?

I suppose I should have answered some questions.

Only experience I have is with AS3, done quite a lot of work in it, so I am happy to jump into any OOP language.

But no, I don't have a great variety of experience.

As I said, I am just a designer ;p

Just looking for a suggestion as to what the best place to start is.
I've heard good things about C# and WPF, but of course I am worried about Cross-platform.

C# is a great language. You can use Mono to port your applications to Mac/Linux although you will have varying success. Java is a great language if you want to develop for different operating systems and devices. And of course, you can't go wrong with C++.

And your thoughts on going the WPF / Silverlight route, with Expression Blend etc?

I've never used them so I can't comment. I don't believe Silverlight is very popular though.
