Well I applied for the Lead Programmer position in my HS's robotics club (I have the teacher for my 2nd period, so he knows me) and Im pretty sure I have a High chance of getting it, because the class is in Java and Im one of the few, if not the ONLY one that knows C++ Competently enough. The problem is that its my FIRST time coding for robots, so I know there a learning curve, since there is no OS that does the simple operations, and I have no idea what to expect since we dont even know WHAT to build until "kick off" and a live broadcast tells us what to build. So Im pretty sure that the micro processor comes with its libraries right? and obviously documentations, so is there any advice on this? Or am I getting the whole idea wrong and that I would need to do very very low level programming like assembly and more advanced stuff like that (I doubt it, its only a highschool competition) I have to juggle Robotics and Sports and HW, so its gonna be tough for me, but Im just a Sophomore, so not much HW for me.
BTW the competition site
USFIRST.org
edit: after abit of googling, I found several APIs for robotics and Interestingly some of them support Java... I find that very interesting... But IDK which one we are gonna use but Im assuming something that supports Java, but I think I can persuade him to use the best one out there... And so the question is which is the best one?

You can probably do C++, but you'll likely be doing a LOT of bit fiddling for your low-level libraries.
It all depends on what the micro-processors come with.

The problem is that the contest is only 6 weeks long for actually making and coding, and we dont even get to start till the "kick off" and the company sends us a crate of parts to make it with so they are sending the microprocessors and stuff like that to fit the regulations.

Also have you looked into the MS Robotics Dev Studio ?
Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio
Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio
So its a IDE for robots? Like just a scripting language + drag and drop type of interface? I already seen the computers in class have Karel, but I doubt thats strong enough
