W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is a good place to have both as tutorial and reference. PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor is perfect documentation on PHP.

W3Schools is really good, that's where I learned a lot.

@debtboy: Yeah, they are supposedly working on the Linux version atm. It should be a priority for them tbh, I hope they manage it soon ;)

xhtml is what i am taking in college right now. It is basically, as others have already said, XML+HTML. The difference is that HTML is primarily for the formatting of information on screen, while XML is for describing the data in the file. Blending the two together allows for formatting, with descriptiveness. It was primarily for improving accessibility. With the release of HTML 5, expect to see an update for xhtml.
