OK,
My oldest daughter gave me her Acer laptop, because
it wouldn't work (virus infested Windows Vista).
I gave her a Dell laptop w/ Windows Xp as a replacement...
Life was good for about 2 months, until she informed me that our Pug mix dog
ruined the Dell laptop (chewed the keyboard, don't ask).
I gave her the Acer laptop back with Fedora 11 and pidgin installed.
She uses the laptop for mostly online things (social networking, AIM, email, etc...)
I installed the GNU version of a flash player after she complained, she couldn't
view youtube. I haven't heard from her since and it's been 3 weeks!!
This is a Windows user (in college) who occasionally had problems due to virus code on her Windows System.
I personally like Fedora if your going to stick to the basic install (open office etc...),
but if your going to run multiple servers as I do on my Gentoo Desktop System,
then SELINUX (Security Enhanced) Linux built into Fedora/Red Hat is
a PITA.
My oldest daughter (a Windows User her whole life), had no problem switching
over to Fedora 11 (Leonidas) as long as she had access to the Web, AIM and email
(Firefox, Pidgin, Comcast Webmail)
I think, everyone needs a Pug mix dog to chew up their keyboard, so
they can ask their dad for Linux machine replacement. :D

eval(base64_decode("cHJpbnQgJ2kgbG92ZSBvbmUtbGluZSBjb2Rlcyc7"));

lol, excellent story. I bought my wife a Dell 9" netbook. She doesn't know computers at all and hates them. Instead of spending an extra $70ish for the XP edition of the netbook I just ordered Ubuntu. She has never complained once or had a problem doing anything she needed.

Ha! Ha! Ha!
Be glad to have my Pug mix dog visit your house and chew up your keyboard
if you want to convert to Linux, but others in the house don't want to. :D

Between the 2 dogs (boxer, pug mix),
White Cap Pionus Parrot, Guinea Pig
and Chinese Hamsters
we have enough also.
NOTE:
We gave away our Bay Horse (appendix),
Dutch Rabbit and Pond goldfish
as it was too much to keep track of.
If anyone wants their keyboard chewed-up,
my pug mix will be more than happy to help out!! :)

Is there anything that she has needed to do for school or otherwise that she couldn't in Linux?

Not yet, but I also have 2 desktops
one Windows XP
MS Office: word, excel, access, etc...
and one Gentoo Linux on a KVM switch 24/7.
She sometimes uses the Windows desktop
as I do also (sometimes).
On a different note:
My youngest daughter (10th grade) uses Ultra VNC client
to connect to my Tight VNC server.
We also have a Samba File server for pictures and music installed
on the Gentoo side as well as apache 2, php and MySQL server.
I don't question her about using Window's apps as I'm just glad
to see her doing school/college work!! :)

The story continues...
My oldest daughter is still happily using Fedora
and recently she jumped on my Linux desktop (Gentoo)
which gave her a taste of Xfce, she didn't like it as much
as Gnome.
2 days later she was on again, but getting a little frustrated
as she wanted to install something, but had no exposure to portage.
I'm thinking of changing my distro so she can use both.
I like Gentoo, but keeping her happy w/ Linux is more important.
I'm too lazy install Fedora and struggle with SELinux for my
file, web, database, VNC, etc... Servers
(special settings are required to make them work).
Maybe something simple with binaries (rpm or deb) and a
default Gnome desktop.(su root support is a must as I'm old school,
sudo over and over again won't do  )
Hingar... where is your Linux disto comparison site???
Do you have any suggestions??
As for our Pug mix dog...
Her taste for computers has dwindled,
but she loves to chew shoes and unmentionables :glare:

Have you thought about teaching her how to install the program she wants on Gentoo? Perhaps if you showed her what she gains with the more minimal interface, she'll get less frustrated.

This brings up a good point...
She really doesn't care to LEARN anything about the OS
or computer for that matter. She's in school to be a nurse
and uses the computer for it's applications and online content.
I think she jumped on my desktop strictly for convience as she
didn't have to go upstairs. I offered to show her and/or install
whatever she wanted, but I get that look and she,
being the impatient teenager she is, I hear...
Whatever dad..., I'll use my laptop.
Now my younger daughter is more patient, and she asks programming
questions every now and then. I'm hoping that she gets interested
enough to do some Linux admin work, but she really likes ROTC training
in school which has most of her focus right now.
I try to keep an open mind when it comes to Linux distros, so it's
about time to try something else. I could make Gentoo into a Fedora
clone with Gnome, RPM and a RPM GUI frontend, but that would be
like (...insert clever analogy here...) and nobody wants that. :D
Looks like it's time to spend a few hours at distrowatch choosing
between 5,000 different variations.

Different option, why not just install an installation program she's familiar with?
