Hi,
I'm just starting out in programming. I'm going some ruby at the moment and have done a little java previously.
I'm just curious as to peoples individual reasons for learning to program!
For me it would have to be because IT is currently playing such a big role in the world and will only continue to play more of a role in the future. So I want to be able to use it to my advantage.
What about you?
Why do you program/Why are you learning to program?

It allows me to create things and be creative, to realize ideas. It is also a very useful tool, also for making money.

My hypothesis is programmers are extremely creative people who happened to be good at math and terrible at art. XD
Wow I changed my sig!

The creative part is probably correct, but look at all the great designers on here.. And we have lots of musicians too.. I think you need a new hypothesis.. :D

@marwex89: Hmm... perhaps I do. What makes a programmer, I wonder. There is also a problem of my use of the word "Art", which in itself has a great deal of plausible definitions behind it, none of which really fits both the contemporary and the ancient meaning of "art", which in older times could be synonymous with "craft", and now is mostly seen as a creative exercise. So, this leads me to the necessity to be more specific.
Currently the observations would lead one to believe that, at least as a general rule, programmers tend to be people who think of novel solutions, yet interestingly find being forced to think within the confines of a box fascinating. Hmm... Perhaps this, the definition of a "Programmer", should be left to a different thread.
I program because I couldn't think of much else to do with my downtime, and it's d*mn fun.

cant really think of any one reason why. I just feel at ease around compuers, i love exploring them, finding new ways to do things, and solving prnblems. Its a great feeling when u finish a project and u look at what youve created.and If i could make a living doing what i love, i would be more than satisfied.

Programming is fun, and I can do anything I want as a programmer. I can use my brainpower to control everyone else as they become more dependent on technology. I am good at programming. People need me. I am now the most powerful man in the world. Programming can solve any problem, especially math problems.
Programming is good!

I enjoy it, it is something I can sit and do for hours on end - day in and day out for weeks at a time. Part of the thrill for me is solving problems.
