Hey,
I've been recently looking to do something in my free time, and I'm really interested in getting into desiging/coding/programming. But, I'm just stuck on deciding what I want to do. I know the whole "do what you want to do" but I'm just curious in some of your opinions.
Keep in mind I'm open to any suggestions and that whatever I do choose, I plan on picking up books and such to keep learning it. I'm not planning on learning whatever it is over night.
Well, this is what I have so far.
I'm a WoW player and that got me interested in making addons. I picked up the WoW-Programming(Lua) book and all and it looks easy/interesting. But the thing is, I really don't want to pay 15 bucks a month just to make addons. I don't play the game anymore, the only reason I'd keep paying for it is to make addons.
Another thing I've been interested in is designing websites and slicing/coding them. I'm not the most creative, the whole slicing/coding thing is what I'm really after but I wouldn't mind designing websites. The only downside I see to this is learning to make the sites and then doing nothing with them. As with the wow addons, I could upload them for people to use and even use them myself if I really wanted to. I can just see myself learning how to make sites and just having a stockpile of them with nothing to do with them.
And a third thing I've been looking into is 3D modeling, specifically GTA4.. I've always been interested in making cars for that game, but eh, I can't see myself learning how to 3d model just from sites and such.
Other options include Lua for GTA4 coding, something to do with Steam(Garry's mod/stand-alone mods). I'd rather to stick to doing something with what I have, game wise I have GTA4/WoW/Steam and programs I have Dreamweaver/Photoshop and I might be able to get a 3d modeling program if I do happen to decide to go that way.
So if there is any others I missed, please share. I'm very sorry that this is a long post, but any replies will be much appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.
Looking for something to do in my spare time.

Well might I say that if you're not interested in programming for programming's sake, it might not be your cup of tea. Most people get into coding, either websites, executable software, or scripts, because they like to create things through mental exercise. Website design and website programming are two different fields, by the way!
If you want to do 3D modeling, there's actually a wealth of educational material on the subject online. That's the only place I learned, the only book I have for 3D is The Blender GameKit, which specializes in the game engine. Everything else I learned by modeling, by researching on Google, and by finding video tutorials.
If you want my suggestion as to what you should look into... I'd say you seem to be more interested in game modding than anything else. Modding requires an amalgamation of each of the skills you addressed, so I'd say learn something about 3D AND scripting, but don't shy away from languages like C++. That, however, is just my impression.

Thank you for the response. I know the very basics of Java/C++ and I enjoyed it. And like I mentioned, I know it's the whole "do what you want to do" type deal, but I'm just looking for opinons and such. Plus, I've pretty much narrowed it down to what I said in the post, the wow addons/website making.
So once again, thanks for the reponse.

well one thing to ask yourself is are you artistically gifted. Art is not something you can learn, you can learn the tool that enables you to make the 3D models but at the end of the day if your not an artist you just have a pile of crap (I know from experience)
Programming is an enjoyable filed in my opinion (web programming is my favorite). Do you enjoy constantly learning is another important question. As a programmer you never stop learning. It is a lot of work and if you don't love programming you will go insane from it.
Programming is more likely to get you a job then modeling is. So if you are looking for somthing to turn into a career the safest path is programming.

There are a few, not many sites ,that offer programming ventures or projects I guess you can call them that give you opportunities, for networking and or team development stuctures where you work with others. Going at it alone sometimes is difficult. I only know of a few. I have tried TheWeb.ca for a year and was able to get into a great project for that time. Made a little bit of money too, which was good. But haven't had too much free time lately that is for sure. Not to mention the fact that you wan't to devote your free time into something that might be down the road profitable, so TheWeb.ca is a great start. It's Canadian though. There are also a lot of gaming sites if you're into that, to try and get yourself some partners or contacts - better finding success sometimes with programmers that share you interest. Good luck!

I liked using Blender for 3D modelling. Learning it was easy but, because i lack of talent my creations (if they get to be called like that) are not good at all.
Programming is even fun.
I learned web programming too but im still waiting for my ordered books (and im affraid i will have to wait even more for them).
Programming for pc's is enjoyable too however it's a bit harder than web programming.
If you like to script and make mods and add ons for games then you could find a game that needs such things and get involved in the game's further development.
Or you could search for an open source game and you could programm that one.
Maybe it depends on what you want to do in the future and what you like to do more, actually,
All of the things you want to do look very nice but if you want to be a programmer in the future, you could practice programming.
