Suppose that a particular large file is available for direct download and as a torrent, which would be a better method to download it ?
Assume that there are no issues with the torrent files, number of seeders etc.

I agree with Baine. Torrents always start slower than direct dls and often torrent speeds radically vary throughout the dl even when there are many seeders.

My experience with Torrents has apparently been the complete opposite of Jordan's and Blaine's. In 99% of cases with legal Torrent downloads, you'll have dozens of seeders and should cap out download speeds almost instantly. Not just that, you're doing the guy who runs the server a favor. :) The exceptions (EG an .ogg download for an obscure artist on Jamendo) are few and far between, and you've still got the server download available.
Wow I changed my sig!

There would be my problem, I imagine. I've never used bittorrent to download from a legal source.

Ok, let me put this in another way. Assuming that there are no problems or restrictions on the server and the torrent is healthy, will I get maximum possible speed on both downloads ?

For torrents, yes, absolutely, you'll get the most out of your download speed, so long as the amount of upload bandwidth all the seeds you are connected to is >= your download speed. For servers, it becomes a dependency on how much upload speed the server allows for one connection but otherwise it's the same.
Assuming in both situations conditions are optimal.

What are your intentions? Are you deciding on how to release your software or just curious?

I'm curious. I was wondering if there are ways to further increase download speeds or whether we already have the best ways for download speed.
