Everyone else seems to have one of these threads, so I may as well join the party.

Who wants to get the ball rolling?
If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line.

Not sure I can really have a favourite yet. I spent a few years dabbling with c# but never anything really serious. I let what I learnt slip away until a few months ago when I decided to get back into programming and start taking it a little more seriously. I've even managed to get some paid work out of it, but that was in web design rather than programming. Since then I've re-learnt a lot of c#, learnt some python and most recently decided to move entirely onto linux and concentrate on c++.

At the moment I'd probably be most productive using c#, but I think I prefer c++.
If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line.

Lol, certainly not a l33t pro just yet. Things are coming along nicely though. I just wish I could find a bit more time to dedicate to it. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions for the C++ forum yet.

No, far from it in fact. I'm actually an accountant. So far programming has only been a hobby.

Could you explain what kind of needs accountants have from their software, seeing as you're both an accountant and a programmer, it should be much easier for you to explain in a way that would be effective for programmers to design something from?

EDIT: I don't mean now, I mean if pressed for the information... or like... if you wanted to. :P

You've actually hit on something I've been thinking about recently. Most software for accountants is either designed by programmers with little real* accountancy knowledge or by accountants with little programming knowledge which is why, for the most part, almost all of my work is done on excel.

The only accountancy based software I use is Sage Line 50 and an package of accountancy and tax software called Iris. Both are pretty good up to a certain level, but certainly have annoyances and limitations.

So, yes, I feel that I could probably explain what we need from software.

* By real accountancy knowledge I mean how a set of accounts is actually prepared and presented. There is a lot more to it than just double entry.
