My name is Gerald Mitchell. I just recently graduated from ITT with a bachelor degree in software engineering. I haven't been able to find a job in the field because I lack on the job experience.
I want to tell you a story. When I first started at ITT I originally went there for networking but in my second quarter I had to take a class in Visual Basic. When I wrote the hello world program that got me hooked. I realized that I could make this machine do whatever I wanted it to do. The next day I switched my studies to software.
Hello everyone

Hey gmitch, welcome to CodeCall! Are you still working with Visual Basic or have you learned other languages as well?

That's where 60% of my training was in. When I learned Java all we used was notepad and a java compiler. I learned C++ using Visual Studio 6. Don't get me wrong Java and C++ are great languages they just put more emphasis on the .net languages

Yeah, I noticed that too. My area is in C++ and recently got into Java interestingly enough. :P They're great for cross-platform dev, and I'm on a Linux box so they're what I use.
Wow I changed my sig!

I would love to develop on the Linux platform. The only exposure I got as far as Linux was batch programming

Just get a cheap hard drive and throw a distro of Linux on it, play with it a bit and find some tools for programming, you'll be able to find your way. You can even use C# on it with Mono. ^_^
Wow I changed my sig!
