Let's take two scenarios. In both of these scenarios there are two indie game makers, one who has made a cross-platform game, the other who has made a Linux-specific game. Both of these indies want to sell their game under conventional licenses, and they need to decide on some way to get the word out about their game. They need advertising!

But this brings up a pretty valid problem. For the cross-platform indie, the obvious thing to do is to target Windows users, and hope for some serendipitous event from a third-party well connected in the Linux market to get their game's name to Linux users, similarly to how it worked with Lugaru. However, this may never happen. On the other hand, with the Linux-specific indie, this is wholly different situation, in that this person needs to come up with some way to advertise specifically to Linux users.

But how? How should the Linux-specific indie, or the cross-platform indie for that matter, go about advertising to Linux users? There isn't any commonly accepted main location to find commercial Linux games, nor many powerful advertising avenues to go through, especially ones an indie can afford.

How should these two go about getting their game to their customers?

If I were said indie company, I would hire an advertising agency and not worry about it. They will figure it out.

However, if I couldn't afford one, as I think you are suggesting we answer that way, I would advertise on places that Linux users visit. LinuxGames - Embrace your inner penguin, codecall.net, linux-games.com, linux.com, etc. I would target every single Linux website, forum and community that I could. A big one would be the Ubuntu forums.
