Kill spam posts. There is no reason why I should be able to click on "unanswered posts" and find month-old spam. Unless you ruthlessly kill spam in your forum, it will never become popular.

Ranting to yourself, relapse?

In the future, just hit the "report post" button. We clean it up.

Why, would we join another forum when there is lots of help here on CC? What does your site have that CC doesn't?

Bad news for you, you still have a ton of spam. Look at the signatures of your posters. In addition, it looks like you're letting people create entire posts to advertise their own companies.

Look at the "thread" on water softeners as an example. Instead of deleting the post as spam, you thanked the person for sharing!

If you look at your thread, "Disadvantages of being freelance" and search for the first line in google, you'll discover that the post is part of a spam campaign or blatantly plagiarized, or both!

Also, you frequently spell "business" as "bussiness", which doesn't reflect well on your forum.

As far as joining your forum to help others and share my knowledge, I'm already doing that here. If you came here to steal forum members, you probably won't get many. If you came here for help in how to improve your site, you will get that.

Jordan started this forum by producing LOTS of original, high quality content. As people joined, he kicked out the spammers quickly, enforced anti-plagiarism policies, etc. It took several years and a lot of work before it became high-ranked.

Currently, your forum has essentially no original content, and is riddled with spam and plagiarized content. The result is that no one has a reason to visit (search engines see dupicate content) or stay (no original content).

You need to set a tone for your forum by posting a ton of content to it. Currently, it looks like a bunch of SEO scammers trying to steal business from each other.

Hi mind-blaster.

I'm not going to repeat the above comments - but they're all valid and relevant.

Instead, a few pointers to, hopefully, help you.

As you are using the phpBB3 engine for your forum (as i am doing for my test forum) it seems that you are encountering a problem common to a lot of boards - SPAM.

phpBB3 has options to check against 2 international databases before allowing access - I recommend you turn it on.
It also has the provision to send an email that is required to be answered - I recommend you also turn that on.

If you type in phpbb3 stopping spam into a search engine, you will find some excellent stuff on prevention & also how to handle robots. Simply put - all robots should be barred from posting EXCEPT those that you specifically allow. You may have to 'tweak' your spam-robot to stop it 'napping' the robots that are allowed - I've not got that far - but if u need help on it, please ask.

For everyone
- another excellent place to be a member of is ProjectHoneyPot - If you subscribe to and receive info on 'bad' logins from the likes of these databases, it is only polite to update them as you come across them attempting to gain access to your site.

Mind-Blaster, do not be too discouraged. But, you really need to lock your site-down so tightly that no-one can get onto it - this will allow you to learn the ins & outs of the security features. Do not simply turn off registration - take the time to read through & alter the permissions tables for people and bots.

My test site is currently 'lurking' at forum.phillw.uk.to - It is not on-line very much - I am busy with setting up and protecting my server from would be assassins and spammers . It should be available - as am I, from about 10:00 GMT - 17:00 GMT Tuesday - Friday.

I have put basic protection onto the forum & would be happy to give you some pointers of where to get additional information from (their own forum is an ideal place to start).

Have a look at the likes of stopforumspam and projecthoneypot - they will give u an inkling of just how bad things are out in the World - Wild - Web. Sign up and become a member of them - use the information they provide, they include all the "how-to's".

There are a countless Forum Boards - Decide WHAT you want your board for and tailor it for that. Do not to try and be everything to everyone.

Well, that's my tuppence worth.

Have a gr8 time - you'll learn loads about php scripting, sql interrogation, CSS, HTML etc.

Regards,

Phill.
