Hey everyone,

I'm starting a username/password website which uses web 2.0 concepts, have the architecture and concept worked out, have a friend who's a graphic designer and I've done the user agreement - just need someone who can build websites. Will share 50/50 in the venture as well as taking care of all the initial startup costs.

What do you mean by "web 2.0 concepts"? For that matter, what's a "username/password" site?

Useful information would be: database to use, language to use, whether it will require AJAX, etc.

Thanks for your questions WP. By web 2.0 concepts I mean user-uploaded content, where the primary function of the site is the sharing of that content. By username/password site I'm alluding to your typical YouTube / eBay / Wikipedia sort of sites that are based around a community of users sharing content.

I would prefer MySQL as the database but it is not essential. The language is also entirely optional but needs to be rich enough to handle some pretty advanced functions (ie the same sort of functions used by eBay or Wikipedia), and again the open source option (Perl) I find attractive. I am not sure what AJAX is but when I described my idea to a IT student friend of mine a while back he said it would definitely require AJAX.

I am very open to the idea of having a group of people work on it and us all sharing the propriety, so if you have some of the skills but not all don't hesitate to respond

I should also add that when this idea gets some momentum behind it I will leave my masters degree to work on the business and legal aspects of it. I have some old uni friends who love the idea and we together are putting in the seed capital. My undergrad degree was in banking and finance, so it's that side of the startup I'm taking care of.

No no, please forget the whose username / password reference, it obviously wasn't a good choice of words. What it will be like is something similar to sourceforge, but with a buy-and-sell aspect to it

Thanks for that Jordan, but I don't really know anything about programming - hence the need for someone else to come on board.

I suspect a pirate job on sourceforge site itself would actually be a great idea - but I'm doing this for profit so a business partner would need to modify our way out of IP protection violation.

So is the person with the graphics on board with this? How many people are in on the project and what all have they done so far? Just need the script now?

the graphics have not been created yet if you're worried about ownership of them. So far, the only movement has been me scribbling out a business abstract, a business plan, a user agreement (which I haven't run passed an actual lawyer), a commitment from a few of my old uni friends and myself to plow in the seed capital, and a manual check of business names and domain names, which are all available.

So to sum up, I'm the only one with there name attached yet.

Have you spent any time to see if there are similar sites with similar services out there?

I have combed the web for several months looking for something similar, and there is one site which has some similarities, but lacks the mass collaboration functionality, the same way the Encyclopedia Britannica lacks the mass collaboration functionality of Wikipedia. I wont share the name of that site just yet because I don't want to give away exactly what my site does, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to express. This site would be competitor-free until somebody tries to copy it.

For those people genuinely interested I would like to hear what sort of programming and web development skills you have
