Please keep in mind I have no computer science or programming experience thus far.
I'm interested in educating myself on programming to primarily assist me in developing algorithmic trading platforms to be used in financial markets. I'm not sure if anyone of you are familiar with quantitative or mathematical finance.
Anyways, this is probably a difficult question to answer, but can anyone chart out a path that would lead me to my goal? Obviously first I need to learn the basics of programming and such but after that what course of study should I take?
Programming for Finance/Trading?

Although I am not familiar with quantitative or mathematical finance, I'm sure some of our members are. Here is a rough goal plan, very basic:
1) Pick a Language
2) Study said language
2a) Ask for help here anytime you need it, :)
3) Create projects
4) Return to 2 until (Skill => advanced)
6) Create pseudocode for your platform
7) Develop platform

You're going up against some big dogs. Read the NY Times story "Stock Traders Find Speed Pays, in Milliseconds" from July 23, 2009 and you'll see what I mean.
I've toyed with the idea myself, but I don't see how even a sophisticated independent trader can compete with the institutional high-frequency arbitrage traders. I've decided to spend my time doing things that are creative and won't exacerbate a nasty obsession with money, like programming (non-trading related) and making art.
