Recently my clients have told me that they can not download some of my files from our download section of the website.
Using the latest Ionfiles with the latest Joomla 1.5
Some of the files download fine and others in zip files download with 0 bytes. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening to some and not others.
I basically have 2 categories : public(free) and registered(for students that register and have paid).
So far only two files are not downloading correctly and they are from the Registered (Student) list.
They bother show enabled and registered, so I don't know what else to check. Can anyone please help.

Hello,
I'm going to move this to the correct section. Can you PM me your download URL? When you say the latest version, do you mean the latest stable or the beta version?

Thank you for responding Jordan. Can I'm not sure how to PM, you exactly. I know that means Private message but I can't see how to do it. This forum is pretty confusing. Usually you just click a members name and all of the ways to contact them show. Well I just see iM's.
when I click on "Check version" it says : This version of ionFiles is the latest available.
I logged into Yahoo messenger just in case that helps.

Hi,
My install suddenly developed this problem as well.
All files are zips.
Only one of them always downloads as 0 bytes.
Made a new file, new entry and every other combination of the 2 and still a 0 byte download.
This particular file was downloaded over 900 times before without problems.
Substituted the "problem" file as the file in another entry and it downloaded fine.
The file I have double checked , its real and valid.
Totally stumped why or how this can happen?
using ver 4.4.4.
the url is gjcwebdesign.com/joomla-downloads-virtuemart.html
and the (2 entries) are "VirtueMart.1.1 Joomfish.2.0 Content Element Files" & "Content Element Files"
Downloading directly from the url is fine
gjcwebdesign.com/media/downloads/virtuemart.1.1_joomfish.2.0_contentelementfiles.zip
(the rendering is putting an extra space in zip! but the url is correct ..space removed I mean..)
any ideas?
Cheers

Sounds like we have similar problems, only my files didn't render with any spaces. I did check though after reading yours. Jordan did point out to me something I didn't know my self. That is to check the "permissions" on the files in question. They should have 755 on them. My own had 644, When I changed it I did get a couple more to work. Still though, I have the 2 files that download with 0 bytes. Clueless however on any further solutions or steps to take.
Hope this might help any!

file & folder permissions are correct as the file had been downloaded over 900 times before it started 0 bytes..
And all the other files download ok and are in the same folder...
Jordan, could you tell me what you told him please ;)

Vuala! I got it to work.
First off thank you Jordan for your patience in explaining and pointing out the permissions thing.
I'm not sure it this helps anyone but I figured it can't hurt to post what I did. Perhaps it can help someone.
#1 Permissions: Going back through each download I noticed a few had 644 and others had 755. Which could have accounted for some of the problems with some of the downloads but not all of them. Even though these files showed they have been downloaded 355 times or more. See I figured they can't be wrong if they are being downloaded, but in fact yes they can as that only shows attempted downloads not completed. In other words, everytime I or anyone else for that matter downloaded this file it does arrive at my desktop, just not completed or "0 bytes" so it got recorded. Making me think it was working fine earlier. Well some files did and other didn't.
#2 I found that one file was spelled with capitols and the actual file it was looking for was in lower case.
Folder : /dmdownloads showed "SalsaRuedaFullCourse_v2.zip"
Folder : /Phocadownloads showed "salsaruedafullcourse.v2.zip"
Well ionFiles was looking for salsaruedafullcourse.v2.zip but finding or downloading "SalsaRuedaFullCourse_v2.zip" so after I switched the names it downloaded fine once again. It must have been switched at some time by my designer accidentally with out realizing it since it had a similar names and all.
#3 This one really threw me for a loop. as I tried everything permissions and renaming and re-downloading using FTP and nothing seemed to work. Well as it turns out IonFiles must need all spaces to be closed or "no spaces" between words. whether you use [someword.someword.zip or someword_someword.zip]
Reading IUMO's post led me to try something.
I simply changed "planning aids materials.zip" to "planning_aids_materials.zip" in ionFiles and Vuala! It worked again.
Concluding that it could be a variety of little things over looked or presumed to be correct as I thought since it worked previously and had 300+ downloads on some of the files. Not to mention, I didn't design it and I'm quite a novice at Joomla!
I sure hope this helps IUMO, and anyone else who may run into this problem Thanks once again Jordan, wouldn't even have know where to begin. Thanks for explaining how IonFiles works...perhaps reminding others in the future not to have spaces between words for IonFiles might help them as well.

thanks dancetherapy for all your info but it still doesn't work.
File permissions...
All files are in the same folder and all have the same permissions.
Only one file shows this 0 bytes problem
File name.....
The problem file has no spaces or capitals.
have tried renaming to just one word, no difference
Have substituted the file and configured the file manager of course to a known good file that downloads in ionfiles without problems.
The problem remains..
Have made a multiple new entries to both new files and existing files which I can already download from ionfiles and these also only give a 0 byte download.
So in other words I can't make any new downloads that work although the existing 5 files still function fine.....
Any ideas?
