delete all mail?

When I view "mail" there are a ton of items in there. I want to see the last item. Is there a way to delete all items? Or all items but the last item?

You can just empty the mail file. The mail file is at:
For root it would be
# /var/spool/mail
For root it would be
# /var/spool/mail/root

Because it is system mail (root) and I am logged in via SSH.
