What is the deal with all these Linux OSes? There are hundreds of communities everyone making his own, why not joining forces to beat MS?

Everyone have their idea of how an operating system should work. Just because they're build around (mostly) the same kernel, doesn't mean they've the same functionality like each other. Some are aimed on servers, some on desktop, some are aimed on network, and some are not, etc.

Yeah, MS has servers, desktop, and network OSes.. and they are all by one company.. I think if they all joined forces with the million ideas they have they can create the best OS ever!

Well that would be a very hard thing to do because every community has it's won ideas on the perfect OS...

Exactly. They would probably be able to work out an overall plan on how the operating system should be, but when it comes into details, then it's going to be difficult.

That is one of the problems with open source software, everyone wants to change it and make their own. It is getting ridiculous how many different versions there are. It would be very confusing for a new person to even know what to select.

There are companies that do make several versions (desktop, server, etc) such as Novell and RedHat and compete with MS fairly well.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. I think it's great to see so many developers. And if you don't like what some people do; then don't use it, somebody else may think it's interesting.

I think it's amazing! Besides that if I had the knowledge I wouldn't mind creating my own! Yeah.. why not? Thats the aim of open-source, distribute anything for free, use it for free, make it your own, customize it, make it better, and share it with others.

I think it's a nice cool concept. Some days ago I was watching TV and I watched a film based on this it was something like Open-source VS other companies making billions.

It makes you conscious of the advantages of open-source.
