We had to install Ubuntu 7.10 at school on a VMware session, and we enabled networking but there was no internet, therefore Ubuntu during installation (mirroring process at about 82%) thought that there was internet and it spend about 45 minutes trying to download the updates! Then we disabled networking and started again, and it worked correctly, installed in a few minutes.

Yeah, maybe VMware ended in some sort of a loop?

There is no such problems reported earlier. Ubuntu is one OS that is always updated. You can get out of this problems in a flash
