I started on slackware many years ago, so many in fact I have no idea what # it was, but I'm sure it was long enough ago that it still needed some tweaking. I love my free O/S but I have gotten to the point for a main work machine, depending on what you do, I don't want to sit there and play with kernels all the time. I want it installed, and tweaked some for my tastes, but not have to sit there and shake my head rebuilding from almost scratch.
Played around with SuSe, didn't really like it, but it was workable, nothing like Gentoo (no offense), but if I want a headache I will bang my head against a brick wall. Also don't really like Red Hat, but I have played around with FC5 and that I did prefer!
I am picky, but then again aren't most geeks?

I am the same way. I tried Ubuntu but did not like it and tried SuSe but didn't like it either. Now I'm using Mandrake and testing it out for a bit :)

I tweak it a lot though and I feel like I've found one to stick with for a bit.

I used Mandrake for about three years, and was very comfortable with it for that time. But when I got a bigger, better machine and high speed internet, I decided to try something else. I have yet to find anything to top it, and Ubuntu won't even boot. So I may be going back.

I think that being picky and tweaking is part of the fun of using Linux. You can't do this kind of stuff in Windows..

The last time I played with Mandrake was back in 99, I am sure many things have changed. Here is a question for everyone; What are you using *nix for, personal, work. & why, not just b/c you are anti M$, that doesn't count. :)

I don't use Linux as my main desktop (still using Windows) but I do prefer Redhat ES4 as a server. Is runs solid and I'm never in a GUI so I don't really care what bells and whistles the other guys have.

Many people are running centOS lately. I have never played too much with anything other than that or RH for a server. FC/Slack and the rest were all play toys for personal use only. Nothing too fancy, just a dump machine used to tinker around with. O and on the distros note, Gentoo is too "girlie" that bothers me. :(
