Hi, I have had internet issues for quite a while. Basically it will work fine for days at a time sometimes and then at other times it will work 5 minutes, stop totally for minutes or hours, work, not work, work, not work.

Well they sent me a new modem which I think will do nothing to help since the modem self test passed on my old one as did the ethernet and dsl connections! I assume it's something on their end unrelated to my hardware or line.

But anyway I had it connected to a wired router. I never installed the wired router's software on this new computer. I'm just curious if that could cause this or would any router issue make it where it would NEVER work rather than make it work sometimes and then not work other times?

Also now that I connected my new modem it will not work whatsoever if I have it connected to the wired router. That's what has me wondering if I could have had some sort of issues due to the router in the past. I assume reality is that their service is what had issues though.

Now I am trying to figure out what to do to get this new one working with the router too as I have forgotten where the installation cd even is. lol

edit: now this makes no sense either. I went to the support site for the router and saw I could update the firmware there. Well I downloaded it and then I typed the address (ip) int eh address bar and went there and it said I was already connected and now my connection works through the router. I went ahead and did the firmware update anyway, but this is extremely confusing why it wasn't working at all and then I didn't rally do anything and now it works. I'm also still confused whether or not this is causing any issues. (router).

If it's working it must not be "done wrong". Not too hard to figure out that the ethernet cable that goes in the modem goes into the router and then another one goes from the router to the modem.

Anyway the question was whether a router could cause internet connection to go back and forth between working and not working. I would assume the problem is on their end involving their equipment, nameservers, or something else, but figured I would ask about this just in case.

As far as the software, I never installed it on this computer in the past either and it worked. And I had things connected this same way. Also I had it connected this way yesterday and it wouldn't work at all yet without the router it was. Then the router suddenly started detecting the connection properly.

Well working and not working, if your router can't "communicate" with the internet then yes, it can interrupt your internet connection, making it look like you have no connection...

But what could cause it to happen just randomly and then start working again? I don't know that the router has been the problem, but I am trying to figure it out.

Also strangely a few specific sites (mainly forum sites I think) had eben making my connection stop working. I would go to the site, my connection would stop working, I would go to other sites and they wouldn't work either for a while. That happened many times on specific sites so something bad apparently happens when i go there. Just a lot of weirdness going on and I checked for viruses already.

?

Not sure if you're joking about the situation there with blocking sites or if you're making a serious statement about how thigns are routed, but I want to figure out this issue. :p

So much for it being the router or old modem. Now my internet is screwing up as I type this and I switched the cable back to go straight to the modem with no improvement, so it's definitely the connection on their end.

A lot of times that connect, disconnect issue if Packet loss. The outdated firmware may have had a communication issue with their updated system.

Example, if you are underwater you can hear people talk but just not clearly.

Also, thec service doesn't always know that there may be a hardware uptate in a certain area. Which was in my case. I found that out days later.

I did have the firmware issue a year or 2 ago. Glad you got it fixed.
