This is kind of code related :( I uninstalled 2 compilers I was trying out and apparently they took some system critical files with them... the add remove programs dialog became unstable- went to microsoft- followed steps to check registry keys, followed steps to have ie repair itself, then followed steps to do an in place upgrade... but when it tried to boot just now, it generated a stop error while trying to load windows.. message said to turn off caching and shaddowing in the bios- I know almost nothing about this kind of stuff, can someone plz help
oh my gosh I'm in deep crap plz help if you can.. uninstalled my compiler and

Wow. That's all I can say. Only Microsoft...
Please post what kind of computer you have (motherboard manufacturer would be immensely helpful). That way I can figure out what the BIOS menu is like and walk you through the process.

Jordan- thanks for asking, but I ended up getting absolutely no where with the start error... I read about a thousand threads of people who had the same problem and couldnt find any solutions really... in every case I could think of, the user just reformatted the drive and started over- I ended up installing a second os.. used it to logon and bail out the data I wanted from the hard drive then lowlevel formatted it. I will be extreemly, again, extreemly, cautious about installing a compiler in the future... especially that crazy cygwin setup process with the funny refresh looking icons... they should have a big red sign on that download that says "if you're a newb, dont mess with this!- get someone to walk you through it" lol :)

Yeah, so um...that was entirely unhelpful to me. I need more info before I can help you so you don't have to reformat your hard drive.

Ah. Well, I guess the best advice I can give then is "never do that again." ;)

YOU SHOULD HAVE! I made the jump in early March...I can count the number of times I've used Windows since then on one hand.

lol- thats what everyone's telling me, but man I'm learning all this actionscript, flash, php, xml, sql, html, photoshop, dreamweaver, mySql, seo etc... LOL in the end I figured the last thing I need to do with all this information coming in, is throw a new OS on top of everything.. so sadly, ubuntu isnt going to happen for me just yet- but I went from win 2000 pro to xp and so far xp seems pretty cool lol... was gonna go to vista, but dude!! can you believe that freakin os is 18+ gigs when installed!!!? xp is like 1.2 installed so I went with the lighter os for speed.
One of the things I didnt like about the whole ubuntu idea was having to rely on wine all the time to run windows programs... to me that seemed a serious point of instability for a system that's built on the premis that it's more reliable.

NO! Do not go to Vista. You will regret it. Especially 64-bit Vista. Trust me, I know from first-hand experience. As for WINE, you really don't need it all that much, except for games like Crysis and such. You can find Linux distros of just about anything--for free, too.

really?? I thought you had to use wine for like everything?? are you saying programs for ubuntu are free???/ how is that possible?? so I could get flash cs4 for free if I go with ubuntu??? lol sounds too good to be true :)
yeah vista being so fat makes me very weary of it... so many bells and whistles seems like too much can go wrong. What happened to you with vista?
