Last time I used linux I used the DSL (**** Small Linux) and ran it right off my computer desktop. Long story short it messed up my XP install and that was on a cab drive so I ruined the computer. I want to use linux again but have it all on a flash drive. What are some ways to avoid what happened before and should I use DSL again?

There are a number of "Live" distros that can run off a USB drive or a CD/DVD-ROM. What kind of features are you looking for from your distro?

I'm looking for a light disto since it's on a flash drive. It should be easy to use since I have never really used Linux before. I'm a C programmer so a disto with a compiler for it but I'm sure they all it.

you can use linux mint. It has a c compiler inbuilt, and is light. Probably has options for the Xcfe environment.

Would be great if people could update the list !
LFS(Linux from scratch)
CLI(Command-Line Interface)

I use Arch linux, and I say the computer is fast; fast I say !

PS - THIS LIST IS ABOUT HOW HARD IT MIGHT BE TO USE THE DISTROS

I disagree with your list Turk4n. I traversed it in reverse, starting with Slackware and ending with Ubuntu. :) There were only three flavors when I started: Slackware, Redhat and Debian.

And you mean, ubuntu is harder to use than Slackware?

No. Slackware 3.1 was incredibly hard for a n00b. However, I'm saying your path to enlightenment is backwards for me.

So im thinking a flash drive would just be alot of trouble. How should I go about doing this then? Im afraid to dual-boot becasue I might mess up my computer and I share this computer with my brother and mother (lets just say my mother is far a techie, brother is ehh ok). Last time I had DSL in a folder on my desktop and I ran it and after ahwile like a week later all of a sudden I boot up my computer and windows xp just falls apart and will not boot up.

Edit: Im using Vista 64bit now
