EDI vs XML

I am curious about EDI... it appears that it is the legacy standard. Based on this article some are claiming that it is wiser to continue with EDI and ignore XML.

EDI/XML

I personally see it as biased but I am unsure... Everyone I have come across thus far has pushed XML technologies. Is it wiser to invest in EDI or XML? Is there really any benefit to using XML over EDI?

Is anybody here finding more demand for one technology over the other?

EDI is certainly not dying and I've never met a trading partner that prefers XML to EDI (that doesn't mean they don't exist, I'm in the Automotive industry). What are your intentions for EDI or XML? If you are making a simple program and want to share/store data, use XML. A little more detail and I'll be able to answer your question better.
