Has anyone had or in a Operating systems class?...I am and we take tests 3 chs a test and we just took first one and I bombed it.I even ask the instructor about what some words mean but more and more words keep poping up that are hard to understand. Is learning abotu operating systems this complicated?...First test was on Ch1 which was history....Ch2 which was memory management and Ch3 virtual memory.
Having hard time understanding...

I took a course in college about this. The book we used was "Understanding Operating Systems" by Flynn & McHoes. It covered operating systems on a generic level occasionally describing differences between operating systems such as Windows/Unix/Linux and Mac. The first chapter of this book was history as well which is one of my favorite subjects for technology. I didn't think the class/book was overly complicated and I could follow along easily.

Although I haven't taken an OS course yet, I find operating systems fun and easy. John still wants me to teach him how to administer Windows technology :P

The courses are fairly indepth. They are not your everyday start/stop services in Windows. Rather, they are different algorithms for memory management, file system specs, and other methodologies.

A book can be well written or poorly written. That said, there probably are quite a few concepts that have to be understood. You may want to get a copy of minix and study its source code.

The first year of Computer Systems Technology at my high school is all about Operating Systems the first half of the year. We had to know at least the basics of windows, mac, and linux platforms. We also learned a bit about Unix too, but only served as an extra credit when it came down to the tests.
We didn't have just one book though. We had a set of many books about each particular operating system and had to create our own study guides that paralleled the differences between the OS's
As mentioned above, if you don't understand what one book is telling your research other resources to help, and don't give up. When you trip and fall don't concern yourself too much with the fall but how you tripped.

Yeah, maybe use online resources to help learn the tricky subjects. I have to agree, that book is fairly boring.
