I think it is an embarassment to real programmers who actually do useful things with their talents.

It depends on whether by the verb 'hack' you mean 'programming', 'breaking into systems', or possibly 'figuring out clever solutions to problems'.

There are also hackers called script kiddies. These are the type that have no real talent and use scripts that others have made. I would estimate that 95% of "self called" hackers are script kiddies. As KelianS states, they are an embarrassment to real coders and as low on the totem poll as people that commit vandalism by painting buildings and trains - worthless.
This refers to "hackers" not crackers. Crackers at least have talent to crack programs.

Crackers are a necessity in my life. I don't know how my life would be if they wouldn't exist. God Help 'em.
I am not one of those (Bad luck)!

Crackers... I have some more respect for. Depending on what they're doing.
For example, I support the people who write programs to get rid of the DRM on iTunes music. If I'm paying $1 a pop, I want to be able to actually USE the music. :P

agreed. So many people today think that hackers are malitious internet criminals. A Hacker is a "Master Programmer" (for want of a better phrase) So I think in that sence hackers are great and hope to be one myself some day. In the sence of people with malitious intent (few of them are actualy hackers though the majority of people consider them so) They need steeper prision sentences.

Personally, I think "hacking" is a dieing art, cracking is alive but hacking has been replaced by online vandalism from 13 year old kids.
