Hello. I am new to the site. I was a programmer for a few years, but I now teach ICT in a college. Looks like an interesting site.

Cheers,

Hey Liveo, welcome to CodeCall! What programming language do/did you use?

Cheers for the welcomes. I was a C++ programmer. I have just started teaching at a college where I am getting the kids into VB.Net.

You should consider teaching C#.NET instead (IMO).

It's a good idea. There might be a couple of problems though. They were using VB6 and I am just upgrading them. The main problem is that the other teacher who teaches programming isn't too much of a geek. Just upgrading to VB.Net is causing her a problem. I am not sure if it is too much of a problem though - they are just learning the basics - loops and arrays and db connections. Don't you think all languages are pretty much the same at that level.

Programming theory I suppose you are correct. I learned programming theory using C++ in college and it could of been applied to VB.NET. However, your students will learn VB (with lazy syntax) and it will make it harder for them to move on to better languages (and more advanced features).

I was going to say that, but I am pretty strict on how they write their code. It is all hungarian and no lazy declarations etc. They are all really getting into it, which I think is the main thing.

I learnt BASIC on a Commodore 64 and it never did me any harm. Looking back on it now, that was a language that had none of the advances around now.

Having said that, I was using javascript last w-e and it took me back to the niceties of c++. Maybe I will think about next year. Maybe this is an interesting topic to ask the general public....

Welcome aboard. When I was in the teaching world, we taught C, C++, or Java before VB. VB has its place, but that's in a corner :)
Programming is a branch of mathematics.
