I'm constantly looking for great books and I often buy books that fall short of my expectations. If you are an avid reader you are probably similar so I figure this thread could help us readers find new exceptional books to read. Just list your favorite books in a similar format as mine:
Technical: Pro PHP by Kevin McArthur
Fantasy: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (currently my favorite of all books)
Biography: Black Beard by Angus Konstam or Augustus by Anthony Everitt
History: Wiked Charleston my Mark Jones
Novel: Where the Red Fern Grows (cannot remember author)
Favorite Series: Harry Potter
Book that made me love reading: Diplomacy of Wolves by Holly Lisle

lol @ winged. Perhaps Mrs.Panther should post her favorites as well. What genre is Amber series?
@ marwex: I've heard a lot of people say The Wheel of Time series is good. I actually have book five (somehow) but have never read it (I would like to start with book 1). I may pick it up when I run out of fresh books to read.

The Wheel of Time series is good (especially first books), but the books are absolutely not independent, so start with nr.1.... :)

I've read a few of David Edding's books. Which one is your favorite? I always thought his characters were to linear and predictable. Perhaps I picked up the wrong series.

The Amber series is more fantasy than sci-fi, but I consider it a bit of a mixture. I've got the 13 books, the companion, and the both books for the Role-Playing game.

I have a lot of favourite technical books.
Lisp in Small Pieces: A good introduction to how the Lisp language is implemented both as an interpreter and later as a compiler.
Compilers - Principles, Techniques and Tools: The text on compilers.
Beginning OpenGL Game Programming: Does what it says on the tin. Separates the OpenGL parts from the platform specific issues so can easily be used for Linux or Mac development as well as Windows.
OpenGL Programming Guide: The red book. Still the authoritative source for all things OpenGL. This covers more ground than BOGLGP.
3D Game Engine Programming: Good introduction to game engine architecture and design. Uses Direct3D and is heavily riddled with Win32isms as a downside. Since it's focused on architecture it isn't really an issue unless you have an understandable physical reaction to exposure to Win32.
Operating Systems - Design and Implementation: Shows the basics of OS design using the Minix code base for comparison.
As for fiction. My favourites are probably the Space Wolf series from WH40k.
