These days the media was focused at the centre of Europe’s science, in CERN, Geneva. The largest experiment ever built successfully started a couple of days ago. The LHC(or Large Hadron Collider) is a proton accelerator which will make protons move at the speed of the light (about 300,000 km/s) around a 42km ring across the city, 100m deep under the surface, in 2 tunnels with different sides and then make them crash together. The energy released at the crash point will be colossal. Scientists hope that they will find answers to many questions like “Were do we come from?”, “How is the Universe created?” by simulating the theory of “Big Bang”.

I’m looking forward for the first results. I’m sure there will be something AMAZING.

So What do You think?

I'm looking much forward to it as well. Unfortunately, has some medias made it sound like it's going to be the end of the world. I even read that several people commited suicide, because they were afraid of armageddon. Fortunately, some people are able to joke with the LHC a bit too.

People are really, evil. These as****** who have never been to school and don't even understand what science is have filled YouTube and web sites with this bu******. This is a $6 billion project, not a joke. I heard that Dr. Hawking said that everything will be OK, there will be Microscopic Black Holes but they will be powerless and will disappear immediately.

Sounds like the results will be interesting. Wasn't something similar ALREADY done by this facility?

As I know there is another proton accelerator near Chicago but LHC is the biggest. The "Big Bang" simulation experiment has never been made before, as I have read.

They were planning to make an even bigger one already in the 1980's, called Superconducting SuperCollider (SSC). They started building it in 1991 in Texas, but it was cancelled already in 1993, because the costs of it. In the two years they got to bore almost 23.5 kilometres of tunnel. It should have been much bigger and greater than the current one. Alone the tunnel should have been 87.1 kilometres (compared to the 27 kilometres of LHC), and each beam should have had a power of 20TeV, which together would be 40TeV (compared to the 14TeV of LHC).

They've also started researching on a new collider, a succeeder to LHC, called VLHC, Very Large Hadron Collider. It's only in the theory-stage, though, and currently there hasn't been any plans on how it's going to be, or where it shall be.
