Many hosting companies put hundreds of websites on a single ip address. This is a common practice since ips are short and web sites are not.
Does having your site hosted on a server with several hundred other sites under 1 ip address affect the site's seo any?

Yes, google penalizes you for this and google is the only Search Engine that matters, ATM.

I would although I don't think it hurts that much. If you figure it out, let us know.

I'm no SEO expert, I would really like to hear from a real expert though :)

Theres a little trick that you can use if you want to see how many sites are hosted on a webserver
First move to Live Search then in the search field put this
IP:<192.168.1.1> replace the Ip 192.168.1.1 with the IP of the WebHosting Provider and you will find every site that is hosted on that server

Well, these things are common.. I guess even AmpHosted does that.. I never looked at mine... gonna check it though :D
My blog, which I'm really working hard on, is doing quite ok... and many good websites there are on shared hosting so I guess it's still ok.

In my opinion, It doesn't affect anything. Because Google knows how the shared web hosting business works not every one can afford a private ip for their site. Their algorithm shouldn't have any code to penalize sites that use the same ip.
But as far as backlinks from the same ip websites are concerned, I am sure, they won't get much importance from Google.

In my opinion, having you website on a dedicated IP is always better, for multiple reasons, and one is SEO.

I now host a few of my sites on private ips. I have not really noticed any benefits other than I can have private nameservers and more ssl certificates.
Regardless, I now do feel that having business and professional sites on a single ip address is better because it shows that your site is professional and shows that you care about your image.
