I was just wondering how much should a person drink per day? Is 8 glasses of water enough to avoid dehydration.

Normally you say one have to drink 2 litres a day, but IIRC, I have heard that you don't actually have to drink that much.
Personally, I drink a lot more than 2 litres of water a day, more like 3 or 4.

Based on the last few articles I read, it depends heavily on your activity level. Nobody seems to even know where the figure of 8 glasses a day came from. My rule of thumb: If I'm thirsty, drink. If I'm not thirsty, don't. I've only had dehydration once, and that was working construction on a humid 90+ degree day.

I haven't had a glass of water (with the exception of at a restaurant (rarely)) in years. In exchange I eat tons of fresh fruits which have a high water content, like oranges, apples, blackberries, ect..

H2O is H2O, doesn't matter where you get it. All food guids credit (I think) 1.3L from food on an average diet.

Actually, research shows that food containing water IS a substitute for drinking water. Caffeinated drinks are less effective since caffeine is a diuretic, however.

I drink about 1 1/2 gallons of water a day. When I use to weight lift and exercise I drank upto 2 gallons day because I read the more water you drank the less your body would store (sodium also causes your body to store water). Once I stopped working out I kept this habit. I don't drink anything but water (and beer) except for coffee in the mornings.
