I just rebuilt my system (new cpu/mobo/ram/vid card). I am trying to reuse the old HDD with op system already installed. The system will POST ok and i can go into BIOS. But, windows XP won't start. Keeps rebooting. Won't start in safe mode or any of the choices. I guess i thought this should work. Have i missed something basic here? I really don't want to reformat.

Frequently, XP is installed with hardware specific settings. Changing the motherboard on it, in particular, can completely hose it.

do a repair installation is the only way it will run right now. The drivers and activation status are set to the old hardware, and xp won't run on a totally different motherboard without a reactivation and drivers.
For that effort, you are best off to do a repair install, get your data off from it (without activating) then reinstall a fresh copy. Repair installs on different hardware can cause problems, and you will find that a repair install will slow your computer down a lot vs a full install.
Hope this helps!

I know that the user is banned, but this might help someone else...
When you change the CPU, XP will need a fresh installation. It won't work if you change the CPU.. even if you leave everything as it was and change just the CPU.. it won't work.

Well that is unfortunate that you have to reinstall Windows XP, if you buy a new processor. :(
