Removing Laptop Battery

Some laptops (though mostly desktops) continue to power the USB ports even after shutting down. This is so that the computer can be quickly woken up if need be in response to a USB device, and so that peripherals can be charged.

Yeah but it has 3 downsides for me:
1. Seems like it's draining my battery (even if not peripherals are attached)
2. My External HDD Remains switched on and running (I can hear it)
3. My laptop cooler stays on (which I can hear during the night)

So I have to unplug everything after I switch off :(

Any ideas on how I can disable that? Or any idea what this stupid 'technology' is called.. maybe I can make some research about it and perhaps find a way to disable it?
