But once it's over, it's over. I'd prefer to keep it until I really need it for something or other - I've been managing OK with Paint.NET.

I keep thinking I'll dig into using GIMP one day, but never really get around to it. So much other stuff to deal with.

Not enough to be helpful. MS Paint isn't exactly helpful when trying to learn GIMP.

It is ok for simple tasks. It looks bad but it works (simple task = getting HTML color, making a square screen crop, drawing a straight line).

What is the best alternative to Photoshop? I don't know **** about graphics so I'm just wondering.

You can try Paintshop Pro - The poor mans alternative to Photoshop. Or "The Gimp" in Linux.
