Based on your observation/experience as a coder in your community, do you feel like there's more people learning programming or less? Say like compare to years 1990s, or 2000, etc.

I read somewhere that there's less quality coders in U.S. I think this may be the large pool of very talented coders emerging outside of U.S. Places like India, Europe, and maybe China. What do you guys think?

So you are saying that coders in the US are better coders than coders in the EU?

I know a lot of coders from the US and from India. India coders are fairly good as are the US coders BUT I know horrible coders from each location. As for your question, I think more people *want* to learn it but I see them loosing interest fast and choosing another career.

No I'm not saying who's a better coder at all. Heck, I'm pretty new to the community. I just wanted to know what the current trend is. Maybe I didn't word my question better. I apologize.

I think you may be right about people losing interest fast. I know a few of my buddies(in their 20s) "want" to learn it too but are always distracted haha.

Well, I think that there are more coders learning today then there was in the past.

With the introduction of things like .NET, now it's a lot easier and more fun to program.

I think there are definitely more programmers now, because more people are interested in computers than they were 10 years ago.

I disagree, I think it appears easier. Most of the work I do on a daily basis has nothing to do with the language I use, and everything to do with reasoning skills, string manipulation, etc. Ask someone to create a Master Mind game and it's amazing how the problem ignores issues such as graphics, and immediately becomes a problem of providing the correct feedback.
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

I do think that the OOP increased the interest of people in programming but that takes you no further than a junior programmer.

So yeah, the number increased, but what about the quality of the graduating coders?

But with all the new objects and classes, you don't think it makes it easier to program? For example, it makes parsing XML data or writing files a breeze!
