Canadian Internet Service Provider tests invading others sites. Rogers Internet Provider has started allowing users only a certain amount of internet usage a month.

Quote

Google has always been known for its clean, lightweight, ad-free search page, but Canada's largest provider of broadband internet is under fire today for messing with it. Toronto-based Rogers has begun testing a controversial technique that allows the media empire to insert its own content into another entity's web page, angering net neutrality proponents.

When I came on this afternoon, there was a notice on a site that I go to, that said I was over my limit, it changed the size of the page.

Now that they figured out that they could do this, has long is it before they start advertising their products on other's web sites? and start covering up other people's content. This would increase their revenue but would make it harder for their customers to enjoy their service.

From past experience, I know that they record our browsing history and download history, so am I supposed to believe that they don't record more about us, like IM conversations?

If the ISP starts doing this people will drop it. Remember about 5-8 years ago when all of the "free" ISPs were available? They simple advertised products/banners in place of charging you a monthly fee. It was a very large boom for about a year and then quickly died.

That's probably what will happen less people will have there internet, while not a lot of people go over their bandwidth limit, some do but the point it is, they could start putting ads on other sites, and advertising themselves on other sites, so they might cover up someone else's ads and cost them a lot of money.

This morning my bandwidth limit was 2 GB a month. My parents upgraded so I got 25 GB a month, but it seems a little ridiculous doesn't it?

I didn't know about the free ISP but I think that their is still a few around isn't there?

I don't know so much what you think, but I don't see this being beneficial for anyone.

They may end up being sued if they continue doing this. How come you do not have unlimited internet access? 25gb is a bit low, IMO.

It is a bit low, well this morning I only had 2 GB. $30 a month got us 2 GB a month.

Well I'm not sure why I don't get unlimited access, I used to have unlimited access.

I hope that they do get sued for this, it is a huge privacy violation, they said that you can ignore the messages that they display but I didn't see a don't show these notifications message.

Broadband capping is pretty annoying. How are you going to access your beloved CodeCall forum and download your beloved CodeCall code with only 2 GB a month? I'd protest to the ISP - it's probably a breach of human rights to deny users enough bandwidth to survive.

I thought ISPs can offer whatever internet access they like? As long as they don't go back on their word after agreeing on an internet access amount.

Most ISP can go back on their word, its part of the contract that they OWN you. They CANT change the price, but theres nothing to stop them from changing the options in the package.

Well yeah it's scary that they can change what they offer, well they have changed the price on us before.

I have 25 gb of usage now, i needed the internet mostly for my entertainment I wouldn't be able to use codecall or other sites I love.

They do other things that I don't really like, recording browsing history and such.

Recording browsing history? If they don't tell you they're doing that, its a breach of your privacy under the Data Protection Act, isn't it?
