I have a request from one of my co-workers who needs his laptop outfitted with an OS that his computer will successfully run.
He is not a tech wizard so he asked me, and I am up for the job, since I can do anything from formatting to installing new OS and configuration. I have installed Gentoo by hand and configured it on my own on a laptop of my own before, but I don't think he should use something like Gentoo on his laptop-- he does not have the capability to keep updating portage!
SO I was wondering-- what Operating System would be a good choice for his computer; it's a pentium3 500MHZ with 128MB of ram so Windows XP would probably be a very bad choice, anything above XP would be too of course.. I was thinking maybe Debian, or Ubuntu?
P.S> to help the selection, basically he is a software developer (not a hardware guy) so he needs development tools(Probably Kdevelop or soemthing, he likes Unix systems and knows hwo to use either Unix or Windows base.. no trouble there).
Any suggestions? Please and thank you! :)

I think Debian or Ubuntu both would be some great choices. And if GNOME has too heavy graphics for the computer to run smoothly, it's always possible to install another desktop environment, like XFCE, etc.

My vote goes for Ubuntu. You can install only what he needs so that his specifications will run it smoothly.
