How do you guys authenticate your SMTP ISP accounts in the PHP ini?

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = smtp.earthlink.net
smtp_port = 25
auth_username = 0548659
auth_password = j1234

Thats what I have tried, and I keep getting errors, even if I make the username 0548659@earthlink.net

Warning: mail(): SMTP server response: 550 Authentication required. Help at Redirecting... in C:\apache2triad\htdocs\smtp.php on line 17

I have been trying different things for about 2 hours now, and of course earthlink support is no support at all..

I kinda found a way around it, if you guys ever tried this:

sendmail

The issue is I get a c++ runtime error every time I send mail, but it does send it, which is weird. It has something to do with the default_domain.
