It doesn't have to be complex.The project must just be big enough for me to work on the whole year.I don't want anything hectic.anything to do with databases would be nice.

Web based or Desktop?
Web Based - Create a website... :)
Desktop - FTP Client, SSH Client, Unzipper (like winRAR). Go to download.com and search for apps. If you find one you like try to make a replica of it. What language are you using anyway?

You could always design your own protocol, It would show a great understanding of the language as well as great creativity, and one year sounds like a good amount of time for somthing like that.
