Google is releasing a Wikipedia called knol which stands for a unit of knowledge. It will be similar to Wikipedia and I think it may be the end of Wikipedia. I dunno if this is really new news or old news but I just found out about it! :loading:

Google is slowly getting their hands involved into everything.

My bet is that Wikipedia will not sell or Google would of owned it by now.

I agree with Jordan. Will this mean that Wikipedia will not popup as #1 position for some searches? Or will Google still make a fair play?

I think that would be a dumb decision on Wikipedia's part. And I'm sure Google will still "play fair," but I wouldn't doubt Google's will be more popular and thus be #1 for those searches.

Google would have advertised. That runs contrary to the purposes of Wikipedia.

I think it's going to be an interesting challange for both Google and Wikipedia... you know having a SE like Google including an 'encyclopedia' it's going to be massive.

Wow, Google is getting involved in practically everything that has anything to do with technology. Search engine, encyclopedia, and I've heard they're sponsoring some prize for someone sending a probe to the moon and back. I've also heard that they're considering going into cell phones.

The rumours are that they are buying up the old mobile phone frequency range that's up for tender here in the UK.

During the .com collapse Google bought up mountains of infrastructure (fibre and such). They have some sort of long term end game planned that goes well beyond search, that can be said for certain. The speculation is advert supported internet.

They have already developed an Operating System for cell phones.

I don't think it is finished or at least it is still in its early stages. The reviews state that it can not even retrieve email from an exchange server yet which is a critical business function.
