Would the selling of HTML templates using tables (including CSS and graphics) make you any money? Or nowadays HTML templates or not used anymore?

Well, As you say yourself, many people prefer other methods.
But still, HTML is not down yet. You can try making other kinds of templates.
I think making Joomla Templates is as Easy as making HTML Templates ( you just need to add some codes ). All you need to care is to have a bit Wide Content area and the rest is in the plate.
I have some Open source graphic items to use with any new Joomla templates you may make, why, you can collect some at joomla24.com.

^Heh, that's how I got my blog up...buying a WP template. I have to say it was marketed pretty effectively too, otherwise I would have opted to use a free one and learn how to design my own later on. Most of the free templates I don't really like, but there are some nice ones out there. What's really gold if you sell a template that easily customized by people with little to now programming experience.

If you can make or port templates for the different CMSs out there - Joomla, WP, Drupal, etc, you can make some good money.
