Does the Alexa rating actually do anything or help you out in anyway? I'm not really seeing the point of it so far.

The only thing I can see it doing is helping you sell your site. It is nice to know what rank you are at though.

It is just a tracker but it is not acurate. Not everyone has the Alexa Toolbar installed so traffic results are generally higher than reported here.

Alexa is good only to give rough estimate of site popularity.

With that being said, you can't really trust its position of your website.

I've noticed a huge drop in our alexa ranking over the last 6 months, but our server site stats are showing an increase. I'm assuming this is because of the merge from xp to vista and not reinstalling the Alexa bar. So, looking around some suggested adding a widget to our site so as to collect better statistics (I assume that this would be comparable to the urchin script we installed for Google analytics). Please check our site widget at the bottom of this page eldoradoguide.com/dir
Is my understanding of the widget correct? Does it gather visit counts?

It's well known that these stats can be faked, and that is the very last thing I want to do as it would also skew my server stats. I just want to know if they offer a more accurate option.

I meant the local population has moved to vista...

I'm unsure if this widget collects stats like the tool-bar or just displays your rank. I would imagine that it does collect stats but it is very possible it does nothing (other than display your rank). If you find any more information please let us know.

Curious, how are the stats faked/cheated? I'm guessing using proxy servers?

I see no way that the stats could be faked, not even using proxy servers. In any case, if they can, the percentage of webmasters who do it is so low you'll probably never see an inaccurate statistic on Alexa.

Well I can't understand this.. I have quite some websites and the most recent one ( TheComputerMaster Technology Blog ) is the top one of them all.. It is the 300,800 position!! And it's just a few weeks old, while I have the website before is it below million ( FindItGlobally.com - Business Directory ) and my oldest website of these is over a million.. I can't understand.

Probably because TheComputerMaster is much more popular than the other sites. Age isn't the biggest factor in determining traffic.
